Birthday Boy

On the 24th June 2004, Wick RBLS Pipe Band and a host of family and friends marked the 70th birthday of Bobby Coghill -  Pipe Major of the band, talented musician on numerous instruments and handyman extraodinaire (!) with a surprise birthday party.Arrangements had to be made with the utmost secrecy – an extremely difficult task since Bobby is normally an integral part of any ‘goings –on’ associated with the band. However, secretary John Bogle did a great job planning and coordinating, and with  assistance from Bobby’s wife Marrie, his family and some close friends, it was even possible to conceal the arrival of some members of The Highland Pipes and Drums Band from Bad Waldsee, Germany.

Bobby has been tutoring their pipers over the past 8 years and they were delighted to be able to come across and join in the celebrations.

Bobby’s first inkling of anything was the arrival outside his house of 25 pipers and 9 drummers playing and marching up and down the street.

The expression on his face confirmed that the secret planning had been more than a success!!!!After the band left, he thought there was to be a ‘wee party’ in the Pipe Band hall.

The party turned out to be a buffet provided by Bobby’s nephew, piper Lesley, of Campbell Catering, followed by a ceilidh in the Backers with some tremendous guest musicians and artistes, all friends and former dance and pipe band colleagues of Bobby, contributing to a great night (and an early morning!!)

A special song had been composed by one of Bobby’s fellow musicians, Roy Stewart – thankfully Bobby didn’t attempt to sing it  - particularly as just before, he had been presented with a special bottle of whiskey!!!!

The sea of happy faces in the hall was evidence of a truly great night (for some, a certain football match result made it even more wonderful!!)

Happy Birthday Bobby !!!!
